Determined to Fight: Black Soldiers from Hastings and Greenburgh in the Civil War
A Talk by Dan Weinfeld
Join us to learn about the history of Black soldiers in the Civil War, specifically those who served from Hastings and Greenburgh. Of particular interest is the complicated story of Joseph A. Riker of Hastings, who enlisted in the Fifth Massachusetts “Colored” Cavalry Regiment.
Note that the event will begin with new trustees being sworn into the Historical Society and a 5-minute preview of our newly digitized Oral History Project. All participants are invited to refreshments after the talk.
Daniel Weinfeld is an attorney and independent researcher, focusing on the Civil War and Reconstruction eras. He is the author of The Jackson County: Reconstruction and Resistance in Post Civil War Florida and several articles in academic journals, as well as the Manor Woods Blog, which covers the politics and history of the Town of Greenburgh. He lives in Hartsdale with his wife, Mira, and daughters Alexa and Abby.
