The Post-Baker House in Hastings: Home of Hastings’ Own Revolutionary War Hero

We have signed copies of Keith Doherty’s new book The Post-Baker House in Hastings: Home of Hastings’ Own Revolutionary War Hero.

There is probably no one structure in Hastings-on-Hudson that was as central to village life for as long a period as the Post-Baker House at 532 Broadway. It was originally built circa 1770 by Peter Post, Hastings’ own Revolutionary War hero, who was beaten half to death for withholding information from British forces that led to their defeat at the Battle of Edgar’s Lane. Subsequently, it belonged to the Baker family, who ran a funeral home on the premises for over 100 years in what went on to become Hastings’ longest-lived commercial enterprise. The house is one of the most important Colonial-era structures in the area and the Baker Funeral Home, as one of the earliest and longest-lived establishments of its kind in the county, is a microcosm of nineteenth-century mortuary practices as well as a key resource for local biographical, demographic, and other information.

J. Keith Doherty is a former Professor of Art History at Boston University, a native of Hastings-on-Hudson and currently a Board member of the Hastings Historical Society. He has been authoring short studies on significant properties across Westchester County for several years under the aegis of Historic Homes of New York LLC.
