Legacy bequests benefit the Historical Society in many ways, by helping to build and maintain our collection, providing support for general maintenance of the Cottage, and defraying the costs of annual exhibits and our ongoing digitization efforts. A bequest is one of the simplest ways to keep Hastings history alive.
Members who are interested in donating to the Society through a legacy bequest have a number of ways to do so. All of these options require the advance notification of your intention to either an attorney or a family member.
Note that any such legacy gift can be undesignated or used where it is most needed, or directed to support one of a number of Society activities, such as:
You, as a donor, can also choose to be acknowledged for your gift or to remain anonymous. If no information is provided to the Society in terms of designation or acknowledgement, a gift will assume to be undesignated and will be acknowledged in our Hastings Historian newsletter.
One option is to include the Society in your will, either when creating a new will or by adding a codicil to an existing will. Note that an outright bequest is fully tax deductible for estate-tax purposes.
In your will, you may arrange for the Society to receive: A set dollar amount,
specific assets, such as securities or other financial instruments (such as a bank or brokerage account), all, or a percentage of, your estate after other obligations have been met (i.e., a residual request)
